- Derived from the Silkworm School founded in 1897, the university boasts a long history and is one of the earliest education institutes in China.
- The school began to cultivate doctors with Zhejiang University in 1995 when the school was approved to recruit student from other countries.
- The university consists of four campuses and covers an area of 140 hectares. It has 17 affiliated colleges, 1 independent college and 49 programs for bachelor degree of which 11 are provincial key programs and 4 are the characteristic program of the Ministry of Education.
