1. Zhejiang University of Media and Communications (ZUMC) Introduction
Zhejiang University of Media and Communications (ZUMC) is one of China’s major hubs that cultivate specialized talents for the broadcast industry and other industries in media and communications. For more than 30 years, ZUMC has provided central and local broadcast and media industries with a myriad of specialized talents. Almost 10,000 full-time students are currently studying in over 50 programmers at the 13 Colleges and Schools of ZUMC.
The University grew out of The Zhejiang Higher Vocational Training School of Radio & Television which was affiliated with The State Administration of Radio Film and Television. In May 2004, with the approval of The Ministry of Education, the School was upgraded to a university and changed its name to the present Zhejiang University of Media & Communications. In October 2011, The Ministry of Education granted the University the right to confer Master’s degrees in Journalism and Media Communications.
The University has two campuses, one in Xiasha Higher Education Zone, Hangzhou, one of China’s most attractive and liveliest cities, which enjoys the reputation of “A Paradise on Earth”, and the other is in Tongxiang, a famous city in the area south of the Yangtze River. The University covers a total area of over 85 hectares with a floor space of 610,000 square metres, of which the Xiasha Campus covers an area of 52 hectares with a floor space of 450,000 square metres, and Tongxiang over 33 hectares with a floor space of 160,000 square metres.
ZUMC consists of 13 self-governing Schools and Colleges, 3 Departments and 7 other research Institutes above the provincial level: The School of Broadcasting Arts, The School of Electronics and Information, The School of Animation, The School of Management, The School of Cultures & Communications, The School of Art Design, The School of Cultural Creativity, The School of Literature, The School of New Media, The School of Journalism and Communications, College of Music, College of Film & TV Arts, College of Continuing Education, Foreign Languages Teaching Centre, Department of College Physical Education and Department of Social Sciences & Teaching.
The University offers distinctive featured majors and courses. Taking media and art majors as its mainstay, at present a system with majors and courses in which varied subjects such as literature, art, engineering and management overlap, coordinate and develop. “The Study of Radio & Television”, “Journalism” and “The Study of Drama and Opera” are the 3 provincial-level key courses at ZUMC. Currently 31 undergraduate majors are on offer, of which, 15 are in art, and Broadcast Announcing & Presenting and Radio & TV Programme Editing & Directing are state-level characteristic majors.
The University employs 81 professors, 188 associate professors and 704 teaching and administrative staff who carry, support and work for the daily teaching and running of the entire school.
The University is well-equipped with advanced teaching and experimental facilities that guarantee our students a professional efficient, and people-friendly learning environment. The total value of educational instruments and facilities has reached 180 million RMB. At the provincial level, five experimental teaching model centres, and 21 laboratories including one for Announcing & Presenting with Broadcast Directing Practice and one for Special Digital Effects are set up and in use. The 22-storey multi-functional Media Tower that houses 17 broadcasting studios of various sizes has been a production base for broadcasting radio and television programmes, teaching/research activities and social services. The Library of the University, with a collection of 960,000 books on various subjects, 750,000 E-books and about 50,000 audio-visual items, has become a regional resource centre for radio and television study and research.
The first aim of the University is to cultivate the media and broadcast talents of its students. We have actively set up an effective mechanism of cooperation and partnership. Nationwide multi-level cooperation with the broadcast industry has resulted in the establishment of over 160 cooperative bases for production, learning and research which provide students with practice and employment platforms. In recent years, international cooperation has made the University a particularly well known Chinese higher education institution in the broadcast industry to our overseas partners. We have partners in the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Sweden, South Korea, France, Germany, Italy and other areas and countries. So far, over 40 institutions of higher learning internationally have established cooperation with ZUMC in student/teacher exchange projects, short-term visits, teacher training, various joint-programmes and other international academic activities. In 2011, with the approval of Hanban (The Confucius Institute Headquarters), ZUMC established its first Confucius Institute in Northern Ireland in partnership with The University of Ulster. All of these have brought about new ideas and modes of management and, in particular, a broad space for learning, teaching and research and a wider range of opportunities for students entering and graduating from ZUMC.
Through years of unremitting efforts, by the strong and professional teaching staff, high quality teaching and research and well-equipped facilities, ZUMC graduates are well received by the industry and society in general, and our graduate employment rates remain above 93% annually.
